What the future beholds for the UK publishing industry and digital technology? Aim and background of the study: The written word is considered instrumental in capturing and disseminating human knowledge irrespective of the fact that it is written in clay, inked in a quill printed on paper or transmitted via electronic bits in email. The trend of spreading the written word is now shifting its focus on e-readers dedicatedly comprising of digital services and multipurpose tablets which could be utilized by 15 to 20% of the worlds developed population by the year 2015. This emerging trend leads to new innovations in content creation and triggers a drastic change in the publishing ecosystem (Bain Company, 2011). Initially, the publishing industry was considered to have less likeliness of encountering the same jolting upheaval as experienced by the music industry upon the introduction of new technologies. The evolution towards the digital age is expected to be quite smooth due to several factors. These factors include continuing attachment of the readers towards the paper, limited levels of electronic piracy, and complementary nature possessed by e-books and paper. The power of word is expected to increase.
